Communications & handheld devices and final discussion: wednesday
Watch the video below and work together as a class to make a decision regarding the video and have a class discussion. Conversation starters:
- When does a person lose control of their photo?
- What are responses that could be given if a person is asked to share an inappropriate photo?
- Can minors be charged for sending photos of themselves? What for and why?
- What would you do if you received a naked photo of one of your friends. How would it make you feel? Would it change the way that you view your friend? What do you think the person sending the photo would want you to do with it?
- Sometimes people will receive sexual images from someone without asking for it or even wanting it. If a person receives an unsolicited image then they should delete it and tell a trusted adult. It is never okay for people to send you images that make you feel uncomfortable.
- Can this pertain to formats other than texting?
Do you send it?
Final Discussion
Students know the information shared this week and the negative impact their actions can lead to regarding cyberbullying, sharing personal information online, creating a digital image that will follow them in the future to college and careers, sexting, etc. So the big question is WHY DOES IT STILL HAPPEN? If teens are taught this information by their parents, teachers, and others, why do they still post inappropriate images or use social media to say cruel things? Why do they sext or share personal information online, and in some cases, arrange to meet someone they met online?
Once final discussion is completed, teachers need to verify they have completed this year's Federal Mandated Internet Safety training by completing the Teacher Completion Form.
